The Hawksworth Trophy

PHILIP TOMKINSON TRIUMPHS AT THE 2014 HAWKSWORTH TROPHY

The prestigious Hawksworth Trophy, a 36-hole strokeplay competition for the leading amateur golfers throughout the north of England, was held at The Bradford Golf Club on Saturday 26th April.

This year's event was won by Philip Tomkinson, playing out of Otley Golf Club, with a two-round gross score of 136, 6 under par, on a day when the early starters found the playing conditions far from conducive for low scoring. In fact, from a first round competition scratch score of 73 (SSS 71) mainly due to the wet start, the day improved so much so that the second round competition scratch score remained at 71.

In an excellent competition, where the changing weather conditions could throw up many different scores, Philip finished four shots ahead of his nearest rival, Andy Jones from Moortown Golf Club on 140 and six ahead of Andy Town from Bingley St. Ives Golf Club who finished in third place on 142.

Many of the competitors stayed on to collect their prizes at the presentation and had nothing but praise for the way that the day was organised and run and for the excellent condition of the course, especially so early in the season.

The ten Bradford Club entrants were led home by Ben Barker on 147.

The winner, Philip Tomkinson, pictured below, said "The Hawksworth Trophy proved once again to be a challenging competition for the region's top players and with the course consistently in good condition early in the season, I am looking forward already to trying to retain the trophy in 2015."

The day wouldn't be what it is if it wasn't for our members and staff who help so much in making the day the success it is and our thanks must go to them all. From the early morning bacon sandwiches from the kitchen, the even earlier members of the green staff who presented an excellent course, the cups of coffee for the starters on the1st tee, the spotters on the 2nd hole to the excellent professionalism on show all day on the registration desk and computer scoring system to the always friendly and professional welcome found in our professional's shop - thanks to everyone!!
